Your servers are backed up every night. Getting one back shouldn’t take a day — Arcserve UDP backs up physical servers and VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox and (on Premium) Nutanix AHV VMs from one console, to storage you own — with Virtual Standby in every edition and a published US price per front-end TB.

This page covers Arcserve UDP — all three editions, Virtual Standby, Instant VM, Assured Recovery, the DR Runbooks add-on, Cyber Resilient Storage and ArcGenie. The rest:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
Image backup copies a whole machine; Virtual Standby keeps a VM built from it, ready to switch on.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Restore from scratch | Arcserve UDP |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Separate tools for servers, VMs and tape | Physical, four hypervisors and tape in one console |
| Getting a server back | Rebuild it, then restore the data | Switch on a Virtual Standby VM, or boot Instant VM |
| Proving recovery | A restore test once a year, if that | Assured Recovery reports (Premium); Runbooks tests in AWS |
| Ransomware | One copy any admin can delete | Immutable CRS copies; AI anomaly alerts on Premium |
| Price | A quote with nothing to compare it to | A US list per front-end TB to benchmark the quote |
| What it is NOT | — | Continuous replication; that is Arcserve RHA |
The cheapest test is a pilot: protect one server, keep a Virtual Standby VM current, switch it on, and time it against your RTO.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
Runs as SaaS or on your own server in UDP 11, holding plans, schedules and reports, with the ArcGenie assistant built in; the older UDP Console is still available.
Agents image physical machines; host-based agentless jobs cover VMware and Hyper-V in every edition, Proxmox from Advanced and Nutanix AHV on Premium only.
Stores recovery points in a datastore on your disks or in AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure; one-to-many replication between servers needs Advanced or Premium.
WORM snapshots on dedicated hardware, an air-gapped dark site or, from CRS 2.0, a VM; Cloud CRS does the same in Arcserve’s cloud. Both require UDP and cost extra.
A console in SaaS or on your server — agents and agentless jobs feeding a Recovery Point Server, with immutable CRS optional.
Arcserve UDP turns each backup into a machine you can switch on, on storage you own.
VMware and Hyper-V in every edition, agentless Proxmox from Advanced in UDP 11, and every Nutanix AHV feature on Premium only.
Granular SQL Server and Exchange from Advanced; Oracle RMAN, hardware snapshots, NDMP and multi-drive tape libraries on Premium.
A Recovery Point Server can write to AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure in every edition, alongside the local disks you own.
A standby VM on vSphere or Hyper-V is updated from each backup, so a failed server is switched on rather than rebuilt from scratch.
Advanced and Premium run Instant VM on vSphere or Hyper-V, and standby or instant VMs in Amazon EC2, Azure and Google Cloud.
The DR Runbooks add-on brings systems up in order in your own AWS account, tests monthly or quarterly, then cleans up and logs evidence.
Cyber Resilient Storage and Cloud CRS add-ons keep immutable snapshots on hardware, a VM, an air-gapped site or Arcserve’s cloud.
Premium flags unusual backup changes and signs of encryption, from UDP 10.3; ArcGenie answers console questions in every edition.
Premium runs scheduled on-premises recovery tests and reports the actual recovery time against your RTO, as evidence for audits.
UDP’s architecture in an English webinar (version 9), building DR as a service on UDP, immutable Cloud CRS copies, and Assured Recovery testing (a Premium feature). All from Arcserve’s official channel; there is no English UDP 11 video yet.
An English tour of UDP’s architecture and recovery options; the interface shown is version 9, two releases back.
How a partner builds DR as a service on UDP with standby VMs; recorded before the DR Runbooks add-on existed.
Pointing UDP at Cloud CRS from the UDP Console to keep immutable copies; Cloud CRS is a separate per-TB purchase.
Scheduling an on-premises recovery test and reading its report; Assured Recovery is a Premium-edition feature.

Arcserve’s own store prices UDP Premium at $199 per front-end TB for a year, or $19.99 a month, with 3- and 5-year terms at $537.30 and $796. The store serves only the US, Australia and New Zealand, so Indian buyers get a partner quote, but the list is a benchmark.
The console that takes the backup also keeps a Virtual Standby VM current and, from Advanced, boots Instant VMs on-premises or in EC2, Azure or Google Cloud. Premium adds Assured Recovery tests; ordered recovery into AWS is the separately bought DR Runbooks add-on.
UDP is self-hosted, so recovery points sit on your disks or in a bucket you own, which can be an Indian site or an Indian cloud region. Immutability is an add-on: Cyber Resilient Storage on hardware, at a dark site or as a VM, priced per back-end TB.
UDP is backup-based, not continuous: the recovery point is the last backup, so seconds-level RPO means Arcserve RHA. Nutanix AHV and AI anomaly detection need Premium, DR Runbooks recovers into AWS only, and Gartner rates Arcserve a Niche Player, not a Leader.
List each server and VM by hypervisor, and mark which need AHV, Proxmox, cloud standby or Assured Recovery tests.
Pick per front-end TB, per OS instance or per socket, a 1-, 3- or 5-year term, and which add-ons you really need.
Stand up the Arcserve Console, a Recovery Point Server and an immutable target, then protect a pilot group.
Switch on a Virtual Standby VM, boot an Instant VM, restore a file, and time each one against your recovery targets.
Confirm every server runs UDP 10.2 or later, add the remaining workloads, and schedule Premium Assured Recovery or Runbooks tests.

“Virtual Standby kept our ERP server warm on a second Hyper-V host. When the primary died we powered the copy on; no restore wait.”
“Seeing the US list per front-end TB before the partner call did not set our rupee quote, but it kept the negotiation honest.”
“We bought Advanced, then found our Nutanix cluster needs Premium. Map every hypervisor to an edition before you sign anything.”
“We were on 10.1 when the August 2025 bulletin landed. Moving to 10.2 took an evening, and now we patch the week a fix ships.”
“Recovery points go to a bucket we own in an Indian region, and the immutable copy sits on a CRS box in our second office.”
“Assured Recovery prints actual recovery time against our target every month. That is the first page our auditor asks to see.”

Arcserve UDP is one of 27 backup & recovery products TechBag carries. The Backup & Recovery guide narrows them to a shortlist and shows the reasoning. →
Drag the sliders (servers and VMs you protect; IT staff-hour cost). Estimates model staff time spent rebuilding failed servers, chasing failed jobs and running manual restore tests, at an assumed 1.5 hours per protected machine a year, with 70% of it removed by Virtual Standby, one console and scheduled recovery tests. Both figures are assumptions. Illustrative.

Published, in USD, on Arcserve’s own store, which sells only to the US, Australia and New Zealand. UDP Premium is $19.99 per front-end TB a month, or $199 for one year, $537.30 for three and $796 for five. Storage add-ons are priced per back-end TB a year: Cyber Resilient Storage $225, Cloud Storage $240, Cloud CRS $415. Standard and Advanced editions, per-socket and per-instance licences and the DR Runbooks add-on are quoted, and Arcserve shows no rupee price. TechBag maps your editions first, then quotes in INR with GST.

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.
Which features need Premium? Nutanix AHV, Assured Recovery, AI anomaly detection, Oracle RMAN and RBAC all do.
Do you run Proxmox? Agentless Proxmox backup arrived in UDP 11 and needs the Advanced or Premium edition.
Is per front-end TB, per OS instance or per CPU socket cheapest for your estate? Model all three before you buy.
Is your backup interval good enough? UDP is backup-based; for seconds-level RPO, price Arcserve RHA instead.
Where will you fail over? Instant VM covers EC2, Azure and Google Cloud on Advanced+; DR Runbooks targets AWS only.
Is one copy immutable? Cyber Resilient Storage and Cloud CRS are add-ons priced per back-end TB, not front-end.
Are all consoles and servers on UDP 10.2 or later, which fixes the August 2025 critical pre-authentication flaws?
Will recovery points live on your Indian site or in an Indian cloud region? Arcserve documents no India Cloud CRS region.
Map your workloads to an edition first, or let a TechBag advisor compare the licence meters, size immutable storage and quote in INR with GST.
