Quick answer

Dell Technologies, of Round Rock, Texas (NYSE: DELL), is led by CEO Michael Dell. TechBag covers only its data protection line: PowerProtect Data Manager, Data Domain, Cyber Recovery and Backup Services, a SaaS service built on Druva. Gartner named Dell a Leader in its 2025 backup Magic Quadrant. Only Backup Services lists prices, in USD on AWS Marketplace; the rest is quoted. Dell India sells all four. Read more ↓ Show less ↑
The portfolio

Four intel pages. Backup, protection storage, cyber recovery and SaaS backup.

Dell’s PowerProtect line, one product at a time — every linked card is a full intel page, from Data Manager and Data Domain to the Cyber Recovery vault and Backup Services.

RecoverPoint, no longer current

Platform & engine

Not on Dell’s current portfolio. RecoverPoint classic hardware reached end of sale on 31 January 2024, with support ending on 31 January 2027, per a third-party end-of-life list. RecoverPoint for VMs is still patched: CVE-2026-22769, a CVSS 10.0 hardcoded credential, went on CISA’s KEV list in February 2026, so anyone still running it should patch to 6.0.3.1 HF1

Avamar and NetWorker

Platform & engine

Dell’s older backup software, still supported but absent from its current portfolio page; Data Manager carries migration tooling for Avamar estates, and TechBag does not review either product on a page of its own

PowerProtect One

Platform & engine

A 1U management appliance paired with a DD6410 of up to 256 TB usable, launched in May 2026 as one box for management, orchestration and protection storage; quoted, and covered on the Data Manager page rather than a page of its own

Dell servers, storage and PCs

Platform & engine

Not covered here: PowerEdge servers, PowerStore and PowerMax arrays, PCs and the rest of Dell’s catalogue sit outside this hub, which reviews the PowerProtect data protection range only

Dell sells across 4 of the products TechBag carries in backup & cyber resilience. The Backup & Cyber Resilience guide shows how the category splits and which part is yours. →

The thesis

Why “where the copy lives” is the whole story

Dell sells the whole chain — the backup software, the deduplicating storage it writes to and an isolated vault for the copy ransomware cannot reach. Size the storage and the vault before the licence, and the quote follows.

01
Proxyless VM backup

Transparent Snapshots

A VIB on each ESXi host lets Data Manager back up VMs without proxies; Dell claims up to 5x faster backups than VADP, from its own September 2026 tests.

02
Smaller backups on Data Domain

DD Boost and deduplication

Commvault, HYCU and Veeam can also write through DD Boost; Dell quotes up to 75:1 reduction on the DD6410 and larger models, from its own testing and telemetry.

03
How the vault is separated

Operational air gap

Cyber Recovery keeps copies in a vault with its own credentials and management plane, separated physically or logically, under compliance-level retention lock.

04
Checking copies before restore

Cyber Detect

Index Engines’ CyberSense engine reads full content in the vault and reports the last good copy; Dell’s 99.99% confidence figure comes from a study Index Engines commissioned.

Start with the job — backup, protection storage, an isolated vault or SaaS data — then pick the PowerProtect product.

Where should you start with Dell?

Answer three questions; we’ll point you at the right starting product. No email required — this isn’t that kind of quiz.

1. What do you need to protect first?

The acronym decoder

Every term on these pages, in one place
PowerProtect
Dell’s brand for its data protection range: Data Manager, Data Domain, Cyber Recovery, Backup Services and PowerProtect One.
Data Domain
Dell’s deduplicating protection storage, sold as appliances, an all-flash Ready Node and Virtual Edition software.
DDVE
Data Domain Virtual Edition, the software form of Data Domain, run on premises or in AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
DD Boost
Data Domain’s protocol that deduplicates at the source, used by Data Manager and by Commvault, HYCU and Veeam.
Usable and logical capacity
Usable is the disk you buy; logical is how much backup data it holds after deduplication, under Dell’s stated ratio.
Cloud Tier
A Data Domain feature that moves older backups to object storage, extending a system’s total capacity.
Retention Lock
Data Domain’s immutability setting, in governance or compliance mode, that stops copies being changed before their date.
Transparent Snapshots
Data Manager’s way of backing up VMware VMs through a module on each ESXi host, with no backup proxies.
Operational air gap
Cyber Recovery’s separation of the vault from production, with its own credentials, controls and management plane.
Cyber Detect
Dell’s 2026 name for the CyberSense analytics engine from Index Engines, which checks vault copies for corruption.
PowerProtect One
A 1U appliance launched in May 2026 that runs management and orchestration alongside a DD6410 for storage.
RPO and RTO
RPO measures how old the most recent recoverable copy is; RTO measures how long until the service is back up.
Track 02 · Buying guides

Buy it like you’ve done this before

The procurement playbook TechBag runs with IT buyers — steps, licensing cheat-sheet, and the pitfalls that cost quarters.

01

Sort the jobs

List what runs in your data centre, what lives in SaaS apps and on laptops, and which copies must survive an attacker with admin rights.

02

Pick software, appliance or SaaS

Data Manager on Data Domain for your own racks, PowerProtect One for a single box, Backup Services when there is nothing to host.

03

Size usable, not logical, capacity

Dell’s logical figures assume its deduplication ratios; size on usable capacity and treat the ratio as a range, not a promise.

04

Decide on a vault

If you need a copy no production admin can reach, plan Cyber Recovery and its separate credentials from the start, not after an incident.

05

Patch and rehearse

Keep DD OS on a fixed release for CVE-2025-36594, retire RecoverPoint for VMs or patch it, and run a restore from the vault before relying on it.

06

Get it priced in rupees

Only Backup Services lists a USD price. TechBag gathers the Dell quotes, checks the capacity sums and quotes the whole design in INR with GST.

Five pitfalls that cost buyers quarters

1

Buying RecoverPoint for new DR

RecoverPoint classic is past end of sale and RecoverPoint for VMs has left Dell’s portfolio after a CVSS 10.0 flaw on CISA’s KEV list.

2

Treating Backup Services as Dell-built

It runs on Druva’s platform. Ask who supports it day to day, where data is stored and how the Druva roadmap reaches Dell customers.

3

Sizing on Dell’s reduction ratio

Up to 75:1 applies to larger models under Dell’s own testing; your ratio depends on data type and retention, so size on usable TB.

4

Assuming copies stay in India

Appliances sit where you rack them, and Backup Services lists Mumbai and Central India only for hybrid workloads; get the SaaS-app region in writing.

5

Leaving DD OS unpatched

CVE-2025-36594, an authentication bypass scored 9.8, affected several DD OS lines in 2025; move to the fixed release before relying on it.

Questions buyers ask about Dell

No. Dell Technologies sells servers, storage arrays, PCs and much more, and TechBag reviews only its data protection range: Data Manager, Data Domain, Cyber Recovery and Backup Services, each with its own page. PowerProtect One is covered on the Data Manager page; the rest of Dell is out of scope.
