Your laptops, Macs and branch servers all back up to the cloud. Whether they can boot there is a choice you make at purchase — Datto Endpoint Backup sends image backups of PCs, Macs and servers straight to the Datto Cloud with no appliance — and only its Disaster Recovery SKU can boot them there, a choice you make before the disaster, not during it.

This page covers Datto Endpoint Backup — both SKUs, Endpoint Backup and Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery. The rest:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
Endpoint backup copies whole PCs and servers to a remote store, so a lost, broken or encrypted machine can be restored or rebuilt.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | USB drives and synced folders | Datto Endpoint Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop data | A USB drive or a synced folder, if the user remembered | Image backups to the Datto Cloud every two hours |
| A branch server dies | Ship hardware, reinstall, restore for days | Boot it in the Datto Cloud — on the DR SKU only |
| Storage planning | Buy another disk when one fills | One pooled allotment across every licence |
| Proof backups work | Nobody checks until a restore fails | Screenshot Verification of each backup, on the DR SKU |
| Leaving the service | The drives are still in a cupboard | Plain SKU keeps nothing; DR SKU keeps 60 days |
| What it is NOT | — | Not an on-site appliance or a place to run production |
The cheapest test is a restore: back up one PC and one server, run a bare-metal restore — and on the DR SKU, boot the server in the Datto Cloud.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
Takes image-based backups of the whole machine and sends them straight to the cloud, with no appliance on site; it is rolled out through your RMM or MDM with deployment tokens.
Datto’s own immutable cloud, not a public cloud account you manage. Its sites span the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Singapore; none is in India.
One multi-tenant portal shared with SIRIS, ALTO and SaaS Protection, where policies, schedules, throttling, data regions and client Hero Reports are set.
With the Disaster Recovery SKU a backed-up machine can be booted as a virtual machine in the Datto Cloud; plain Endpoint Backup has no such option at all.
An agent on every machine — image backups straight to the Datto Cloud, where only the DR SKU can boot them.
Datto Endpoint Backup sends whole-machine backups straight to the Datto Cloud — and only one of its two SKUs can boot them there.
Image-based backups go directly from each PC or server to the Datto Cloud, so there is no box to buy, rack or replace at any site.
Plain Endpoint Backup backs Windows PCs up every two hours; the Disaster Recovery SKU runs hourly for servers and PCs alike.
On the DR SKU, Cloud Deletion Defense can restore snapshots after an agent is deleted, by accident or by an attacker in the portal.
A full bare-metal restore puts the old machine back on the same or different hardware, without reinstalling Windows or its apps.
Differential restore copies back only the blocks that changed, and files can go to the original place, a new path or a new device.
The DR SKU can spin a backed-up server up as a virtual machine in the Datto Cloud, for emergencies and DR tests, not for production.
The DR SKU adds Screenshot Verification, which checks that a backup boots and its applications open, plus scanning for ransomware.
Each Endpoint Backup licence adds its allotment to a shared pool, so a large server can use space a small laptop never needs.
Agents roll out through an RMM or MDM with deployment tokens, and the portal ties in with IT Glue, PSAs and Datto’s other backup lines.

Both SKUs use the same agent and the same cloud, which is why buyers treat them as one. They are not. Only Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery can boot a machine in the Datto Cloud, and Datto’s terms say you cannot upgrade to it during a disaster or otherwise after purchase. Decide per machine before signing.
The DR SKU gives a branch server or a lone cloud instance the kind of recovery that used to need a SIRIS box: hourly backups, a boot in the Datto Cloud and verified screenshots. It is a flat fee, with no cloud storage, hosting, DR or self-service DR-testing charges on top.
Every Endpoint Backup licence brings a storage allotment that joins one pool, so heavy and light machines balance out. Go over the pool and the excess is billed monthly in arrears; fall back under it and the charge stops. Kaseya 365 Endpoint instead carries 5 TB shared across all endpoints.
Plain Endpoint Backup cannot boot anything in the cloud, and when its subscription ends nothing is kept, so export first. Macs are covered only by the plain SKU, and Linux only by the DR SKU. There is no Datto list price, no India data centre and no rupee price; cloud boots are for emergencies and tests only.
List each server you would need to boot elsewhere after a failure; those go on the DR SKU. Laptops and Macs fit plain Endpoint Backup.
Estimate data per machine to size the pooled allotment, and choose the Datto Cloud region — Singapore is the nearest to India.
Push the agent to one PC, one Mac and one server through your RMM with a deployment token, and watch the first backups land.
Run a bare-metal restore onto different hardware, and on the DR SKU boot a server in the Datto Cloud as a test, then shut it down.
Move the remaining machines, and record how backups are exported before any plain Endpoint Backup licence is ended.

“Our MSP put the plant’s file server on plain Endpoint Backup to save a little. When its disks failed we had no cloud boot, only a rebuild.”
“The branch servers are on the DR SKU. In the quarterly test one booted in the Datto Cloud and staff reached it the same morning.”
“A stolen laptop came back onto a different model through bare-metal restore, apps and settings intact, before the user’s lunch.”
“Pooled storage suits us: the design team’s Macs are heavy, the sales laptops are light, and one pool absorbs both without overages.”
“The auditors asked where copies live. Singapore is the answer, and we had to write that into our data-handling policy before sign-off.”
“Our Linux application servers only fit the DR SKU, which we learned in scoping, not after. Get the OS list right before the quote.”
Analyst firms bury this view behind paywalls, and G2 retired its Grid. So here’s TechBag’s synthesis of the endpoint backup market — tap any vendor to see why it sits where it does.
Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
Two SKUs; cloud boot on the DR SKU only; quoted by an MSP.
The grid nobody publishes — how far a product goes beyond restoring files, up to booting machines in the cloud, vs how much of its price and storage terms it publishes.
Cloud boot on the DR SKU only; no list price, storage pooled.

Datto Endpoint Backup is one of 27 backup & recovery products TechBag carries. The Backup & Recovery guide narrows them to a shortlist and shows the reasoning. →
Drag the sliders (PCs, Macs and servers you protect; IT staff-hour cost). Estimates model staff time spent chasing failed or missing backups, restoring lost files and rebuilding dead machines by hand, at an assumed 1.5 hours per machine a year, with 70% of it removed by managed image backup and bare-metal restore. Both figures are assumptions. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Not published: Datto sells both SKUs through MSPs by quote (Kaseya also sells to in-house IT teams in some markets). Endpoint Backup licences each carry a Datto Cloud storage allotment, pooled across all licences, with excess billed monthly in arrears; Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery is a flat fee with no storage, hosting, DR or self-service DR-testing charges. Endpoint backup also comes inside Kaseya 365 Endpoint with 5 TB of shared storage and a 50-endpoint minimum; Pro is reported at $5.25 and Express at $2.25 per endpoint a month — press and reseller figures, not a Kaseya list. Prices are in USD. TechBag sorts your machines into the right SKU first, then quotes in INR with GST.

Which servers must be bootable within hours of a failure? Put each one on the DR SKU now; you cannot upgrade it mid-disaster.
Do you back up Macs? Only plain Endpoint Backup covers macOS; the DR SKU protects Windows and Linux servers and Windows PCs.
Do you run Linux servers? They are covered only by the DR SKU, so price them at that tier from the start.
How much data per machine? Licences share one pooled allotment, and excess above it is billed monthly in arrears.
Can backups be stored in Singapore? Datto has no India data centre; check your regulator and your contracts first.
What happens at the end? Plain Endpoint Backup keeps nothing after termination, so plan the export in advance.
Which MSP will sell and support it? Datto sells through MSPs, and your support terms are the MSP’s terms.
Would Kaseya 365 Endpoint fit better? It includes endpoint backup with 5 TB shared, but needs at least 50 endpoints.
List which machines you would need to boot after a failure first, or let a TechBag advisor sort your estate into the two SKUs and size the storage pool.
