Cove is cloud-first backup for servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 — with no appliance to buy, size or refresh, and no appliance destroyed alongside the site it protected. The honest trade: restore speed follows your bandwidth, so test a full restore before you commit.
Data residency & processing
This is the sharpest residency question in the portfolio, because a backup is a complete copy of everything — customer records, financial data, and personal data under the DPDP Act. A residency answer adequate for monitoring telemetry may not be adequate for that. N-able’s Bengaluru GCC is 100+ engineers, which is a fact about people rather than about storage. Establish the backup storage region, the sub-processor list, and what happens to your data on termination — in writing. Note also that financial-transaction records carry a separate in-India duty, and if your backups contain those, that duty follows the backup.
On CERT-In: the 180-day ICT log duty applies to you as the regulated entity, not to N-able. CERT-In’s own FAQ permits storage outside India provided logs are producible to the authorities in reasonable time — but if you are IRDAI-regulated, the 2023 audit annexure asks as a plain yes/no whether ICT logs are stored in India, and that is where an offshore region actually costs you.

This page covers Cove Data Protection — backup and recovery. The rest of the portfolio:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
Cloud-first backup for servers, workstations and Microsoft 365, with recovery from file level through to full DR — and no appliance to buy, size or refresh.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Appliance-based backup | Cove Data Protection (N-able) |
|---|---|---|
| Per-site cost | An appliance to buy and size | Software — no capital per site |
| Refresh cycle | Every few years, per site | None |
| Sizing | Guess three years ahead | Grows with you |
| Offsite copy | A replication job that must work | Offsite by construction |
| Site disaster | The appliance burns too | The copy is elsewhere already |
| Microsoft 365 | A second vendor and console | Same product, same dashboard |
| Restore speed | Local disk — fast | Follows bandwidth — the honest trade |
| Adding a client site | A procurement project | A software action |
Cove is cloud-first: no appliance to buy, size or refresh, no capital cost per site, and Microsoft 365 backup in the same product — which matters because Microsoft’s own retention is NOT backup. The honest trade: restore speed follows bandwidth rather than local disk, so model a full-site restore against your largest client before committing. Need fast local recovery of huge datasets? An appliance model still wins.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
Backups go straight to cloud storage, not an on-site appliance, so an MSP avoids per-site hardware cost and refreshes, and nothing local fails alongside what it protects.
Optional local caching speeds the everyday restores, a deleted file or corrupted database, while the authoritative copy stays offsite. The cache is disposable.
Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams sit in the same console as servers. Microsoft’s retention guards against Microsoft losing data, not against deletion.
File and folder restore, full machine recovery, and disaster recovery including DRaaS. Recovery is the product; grade requirements by scenario and test each.
One web dashboard shows backup status for servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 across every client, so a failed job is seen, not discovered later.
One cloud-first backup with no appliance to buy — servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 restored from one dashboard.
Cove backs up servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 straight to the cloud — no appliance to buy, size or replace — the data-protection product of the N-able portfolio.
Physical and virtual servers are backed up the same way, without a separate product or a parallel process for either.
Laptops and desktops sit in the same product as servers; endpoints hold much irreplaceable work and are where ransomware usually starts.
Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams in the same console. Microsoft’s retention protects against Microsoft losing data, not deletion.
Backups go to cloud storage with no on-site appliance: no capital cost per site, no sizing guess, no refresh cycle.
An optional local copy speeds everyday restores while the authoritative copy stays offsite; lose the cache and you lose only speed.
The everyday restore: someone deleted something and wants it back. You run it most often, so its speed and simplicity matter most.
Recover a whole server or workstation after hardware failure or ransomware; time it against your real data and connection in the trial.
Site-level recovery delivered as a service, not from your own second data centre. Rehearse it rather than assume it works.
Retention beyond the operational window for regulatory or contractual needs; know which data needs what before configuring.
One dashboard shows what ran, failed or did not report across every client, because unseen failed jobs cause most real data loss.
Cove is separate from the RMM platforms but often bundled in one quote; compare the whole basket, not one component.
Recovery speed depends on your connection; with large datasets and a thin link, model a full-site restore in the trial first.

Cove backs up straight to the cloud, with optional local caching: no appliance to buy, size, refresh or lose with the building it protects. For an MSP, adding a client site becomes a software action, not a capital conversation. The trade: restore speed follows your bandwidth, not local disk, so test a full-site restore.
Microsoft 365 retention protects against Microsoft losing your data, not against a deletion, a compromised account or ransomware, and retention windows expire. Cove backs up Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams with your own retention, in the same dashboard as servers, so there is no second console nobody checks.
Every product completes backups; what matters is how long a real recovery takes on your data and connection. Restore a file, a folder, a whole machine, and model a full-site recovery, timing each. If contracts promise a four-hour RTO and a full-site restore takes fourteen, that gap is invisible in any dashboard.
Cove is a separate product from the N-central and N-sight RMM platforms, though often bundled in one quote, so compare the whole basket across vendors. N-able publishes no rate card. Pin down how storage is charged, metered or capped, and what extra retention costs: backup deals go wrong as data grows.
Cove backs up servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 to the cloud with no appliance, plus DRaaS and archiving. Veeam is deeper, Acronis bundles security, Druva is cloud-native with an India presence, and Datto’s appliance restores large datasets faster locally. Pricing is quote-only, and the Bengaluru GCC does not settle data residency.
Set how fast you must recover a file, a server and a site; any recovery time objective in client contracts is the specification.
Thirty days across servers, workstations and Microsoft 365; confirm the dashboard shows what did not run.
Restore a file, a folder and a whole machine, model a full-site recovery, and time each against your data, link and RTOs.
Learn how storage is charged, metered or capped, and what extra retention costs; pricing goes wrong when data doubles in year three.

“No appliance per site changed our proposition. We used to need a capital conversation per client; now onboarding a site is software.”
“Microsoft 365 backup in the same console retired a second vendor, a second renewal and the second dashboard nobody checked.”
“We timed a full machine restore in the trial: slower than our old appliance, fast enough for our RTO, and known before signing.”
“Restore speed follows your link. For a client with several terabytes and a modest connection, we kept an appliance-based product.”
“The dashboard showing what did NOT run across every client is the feature we underrated. Failed jobs used to be found by accident.”
“Read the growth terms, not just the rate. Backup pricing goes wrong in year three when the data has doubled.”
“Veeam is deeper and Datto restores faster locally, but Cove fit our many-small-sites shape. TechBag laid out all three.”
“Backups are a complete copy of everything, so residency matters more. TechBag got the storage region in writing before we signed.”
Analyst firms bury this view behind paywalls, and review-site grids score satisfaction, not fit for your estate. So here’s TechBag’s synthesis of the backup & recovery market — tap any vendor to see why it sits where it does.
Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
Cloud-first, no appliance. This page's product.
The grid nobody publishes — how well it recovers vs how little you have to run.
Simple to run; restore speed follows bandwidth.

Veeam, Acronis, Druva, Datto and Commvault — honest lanes. The edge here is having no appliance at all. Need fast LOCAL recovery of very large datasets? Datto's appliance model still wins that specific race, and we say so.
| Dimension | Cove | Veeam | Acronis | Druva | Datto | Commvault |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Cloud-first, MSP-oriented | The depth leader | Backup + security, one agent | Cloud-native SaaS backup | Appliance-based instant recovery | Enterprise data management |
| Appliance required? | No — the design decision | Optional; often deployed | Optional | No | Usual; software-only too | Optional |
| Microsoft 365 backup | Same product and console | Separate product | Included | Strong | Separate SaaS Protection | Included |
| Large-dataset local restore | Follows bandwidth — model it | Fast with local repository | Fast with local | Cloud-dependent | Instant local recovery | Fast |
| MSP multi-client console | Yes — built for it | Via Service Provider Console | Yes | Enterprise-leaning | Deeply MSP-embedded | Enterprise-leaning |
| India presence | GCC only; no India DC | Vault in Azure India | Mumbai data centre | India presence + region | Via Kaseya | Regional |
| Best fit | Many small sites, no hardware conversation | Depth, especially virtualised estates | Backup and security in one agent | Cloud-native SaaS backup at scale | Fast local recovery of large datasets | Enterprise data management |
Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.

Drag the sliders (site count; IT hourly cost as a loaded rate). Estimates contrast appliance-based backup — hardware per site, a sizing guess, a refresh cycle and a procurement conversation per client — against a cloud-first product with none of those. The modelled savings are the capital per site and the refresh cycle you no longer plan. NB: this model does NOT price restore speed, which follows bandwidth here — if your RTO is tight on a large dataset, an appliance still wins and no saving compensates. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Quote-only, like the rest of N-able's portfolio — there is no published rate card, and most of the backup category works this way. Cove is a SEPARATE product from the N-central and N-sight RMM platforms, though commonly bundled into one quote: price the whole basket, because a rival's all-in bundle is not comparable to an RMM line. And for backup specifically, the GROWTH terms matter more than the rate — how storage is charged, whether it is metered or capped, what retention beyond the standard window costs. Model your data at three years, not today. TechBag obtains the quote, reads those terms with you, and invoices in INR with GST.
Best for many sites, no hardware
Best for a broader rollout
Best understood before year three
Whatever the list prices above, TechBag negotiates a significantly better deal — with GST-compliant INR invoicing and local support. Ask us for your discounted quote.

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.
What recovery time do your client contracts promise for a file, a server and a whole site?
In the trial, did you restore a full machine and time it against your real data and link?
How long would a full-site restore take for your largest client over their actual connection?
Do you know Microsoft’s retention is not backup and does not protect against deletion, compromise or ransomware?
Does the dashboard surface what did NOT run? Most real data loss starts with a failed job nobody noticed, not with a failed restore.
How is storage charged as data grows, and what does retention beyond the standard window cost?
Cove is a SEPARATE product from the RMM. Have you priced RMM + backup + security together, or just one line?
A backup is a complete copy of everything, so residency is sharper here than elsewhere. Have you got the storage region in writing?
Write down the recovery time your client contracts promise, then trial Cove and run a graded restore test — file, folder, full machine, modelled full site — timed against your real data and connection. Compare the numbers. Or let a TechBag advisor run that test with you and price Cove honestly against Veeam, Acronis, Druva and Datto, which we also sell.
